RSS made easy

Would you like to be notified when this blog posts new content?

All you do is use this wonderfully nifty thing called RSS.

RSS in Simple Terms

I find it quite funny that the name RSS means Really Simple Syndication, yet the explanations of it online are mostly VERY complicated. So here is a basic explanation.

Normally when we want to read the updates on websites we have to bookmark it, then check back regularly and search for new content.

RSS has changed this dramatically and made it SO simple for people.

Now all you do is click on a site’s RSS link and every time they update with new content, it will be sent directly to you. No more searching, or worrying that you have missed out on something.

This is how it works

1. Decide that you’d like to be advised of new information.

2. Get a ‘reader’ to view the information on on your computer.

A reader is a place to store your RSS incoming information thats all. It could be a webpage like Google uses, or a cellphone, ipod, or program on your computer etc.

Google is very user friendly and has a tour to tell you all about it.
“With Google Reader, you subscribe to your favorite websites and let new content come to you.”

Bookmark the Google Reader Page and, get an account with Google.

Every time you open your bookmarked Google Reader Webpage, it will list the new articles that have been posted on the sites where you clicked on RSS.

3. The site you want updates for has to be set up for RSS. This blog on wordpress automatically has it, but not all do.

Using this blog site as an example. To the right you will see ‘Entries RSS’ & Comments RSS, on my other blog you will see a little orange box up the top with Posts and Comments beside them.

4. Next you have to tell the website that you want it’s updates. So click on the RSS feed button or link, then select google reader and click. Thats it!
